Canon 24-105mm f4 L – IS it really worth it?

Is the Image Stabilisation (IS) really worth having on the 24-105mm L lens or any other Canon lens in the L range?

I have not used this lens in a shoot as such and have only handled on a 5D Mkii.  The weight advantage is appealing but I’m not sure f4 would be enough for me personally and how effective is the IS?

The extra reach is neither here nor there over the 24-70mm f2.8 which incidentally does not have IS.

I would imagine an upgrade is due for the 24-70mm with IS but surely if this was that important we would already see this in the range.  The 24-70mm has been around for a number of years now and hasn’t been replaced, that’s got to be a good sign…right?

Any feedback is welcome, what’s the consensus out there?
